  • MRZ (Machine-Readable Zone)

    The two or three lines of machine-readable characters at the foot of a passport data page or on the back of some ID cards.

  • VIZ (Visual Inspection Zone)

    The human-readable printed fields on a document: name, dates, document number and so on.

  • PDF417

    The two-dimensional barcode on the back of a North American driving licence. It encodes the same data that is printed on the front.

  • AAMVA (American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators)

    The body whose standard defines the driving-licence barcode, and the network through which licence data can be verified against the issuing DMV.

  • OCR (Optical Character Recognition)

    Reading printed text from an image and turning it into data.

  • DTA (Document data capture)

    Reading a document into structured data: OCR of the printed fields, the MRZ and the PDF417 barcode.

  • DFA (Document Forensic Authentication)

    Testing whether a document is genuine, and returning a Pass, Warning or Fail determination with the reasons.

  • mDL (Mobile driving licence)

    A driving licence held as a digital credential on a phone and presented to a reader.

  • ISO 18013-5

    The international standard for mobile driving licence applications and the exchange of their data with a reader.

  • Liveness

    A check that the person, or the document, in front of the camera is physically present, rather than a photograph, a screen or a copy.

  • Duplex

    Capturing both sides of a document in one pass, rather than one side at a time.

  • Simplex

    Capturing one side of a document at a time.

  • LPT (Light-Passthrough Testing)

    Shining light through a card to detect and validate micro laser perforation.

  • ID-1

    The standard card size used by driving licences, ID cards and payment cards.

  • TWAIN

    A widely used standard interface between imaging devices, such as scanners, and software.
